President To Challenge Referendum Bill At Constitutional Court

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis on Wednesday said he would challenge at the Constitutional Court a bill on the organization of referendums that removes the head of state from the procedure of organizing the popular vote on various matters.

The Lower Chamber passed the bill on April 4 as decision-making forum. The president sent the bill back to Parliament for reexamination but lawmakers passed the bill in its initial form.

So far, the Parliament drafted a separate bill every time a referendum was held and the Romanian president would either sign the bill into law or send it back to Parliament for re-examination.
