PM: Cernavoda Nuclear Reactor Investments To Start Shortly

Romanian Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu said Wednesday Romania targets energy independence and investments in a third and fourth nuclear reactor at the Cernavoda nuclear power plant will start shortly.

“Romania's targeted goal is energy independence and my government will support all technologies producing sustainable electricity. We want to start investments into a third and fourth nuclear reactor at Cernavoda as soon as possible,” said Grindeanu at the Nuclear Research Institute in Mioveni, southern Romania.

He said the institute could supply equipment, services and technical assistance for the two reactors to be built, as it did for the first two.

The Council of the Organization for Economic Co‑operation and Development (OECD) last week invited Romania to become a full member of the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) and its Data Bank. The accession will be formalized in June 2017.

“One can’t look at the current growth rate without wondering what risks lie ahead,” Nicolaescu told Bloomberg in an interview. “Too often we’ve had fiscal policy going in one direction and monetary policy in another. I don’t think this is good for the country.”
