It said crude steel production for the 64 countries reporting to the association increased to around 372 million metric tons (mmt), up 8% from 341 mmt in the first quarter of 2010.

In March alone, Romanian crude steel output was at 350,000 tons, 10.1% higher from 318,000 tons in the month before.

The European Union produced 45.6 mmt of crude steel in the first quarter, up by nearly 7% compared with the same quarter a year earlier.

Germany was top producer in the January-March period, with 11.4 mmt of crude steel.

The World Steel Association was founded in 1967 and is one of the most important steel organizations worldwide that reunites 180 producers, including 19 of the world's largest 20 steelmakers, alongside with national and regional associations and research institutes.

The members of the organization produce annually approximately 85% of the steel delivered worldwide, according to World Steel Association's website.
