Romanian insurer Generali Asigurari paid Niro Investment 55.25 million lei (EUR13.5 million) in March to cover the damage caused by a fire in the "Dragonul Rosu" commercial area, the highest amount ever paid by an insurer in Romania.

The fire took place in May last year.

Generali Romania general manager Marie Kovarova told MEDIAFAX that although the claim was the highest ever paid in Romania, it did not affect the company's financial stability.

The insurer also paid around EUR100,000 to the market's tenants for damage to their goods.

Previously, the highest claim paid by Generali in Romania was for EUR4.2 million, for a fire which damaged the merchandise, equipment and building of a textile factory, according to Generali PPF Holding data.

Generali Romania, among the top ten local insurers, has a share capital of RON129.45 million and is part of Italy's Generali Group, one of the world's largest insurance groups.
