Leu Ends Down Vs Euro In Quiet Trade

Romania’s leu retreated modestly against the euro amid a quiet session Thursday and closed at 4.079/4.081 units, from 4.068/4.0695 units a day earlier.

Romania's leu retreated modestly against the euro amid a quiet session Thursday and closed at 4.079/4.081 units, from 4.068/4.0695 units a day earlier.

The leu opened slightly up at 4.067/4.07 per euro and further gained ground, amid a positive sentiment in the region.

It touched the day's high at 4.0665 to the euro in the morning, but later changed trend, as investors took profits.

The central bank set the leu's reference at 4.076 per euro, slightly stronger from 4.0767 per euro Wednesday.

Against the US dollar, the leu's indicative gained 1.2% on the day at 2.7449 units, a new record high since December 2008.

On the money market, overnight rates rose slightly to 5.3%-5.8% a year, from 5.2%-5.2% a year Wednesday. The central bank pumped RON403.7 million (EUR99 million) into the market in a four-day repurchase agreement operation at an interest rate of 6.25% a year, equal to the monetary policy rate.
