APIA: Car Sales +38% In April To 8,465 Units

Romanian new passenger car sales rose 38% on the month to 8,465 units in April, but were down 18.4% on the year, the Automotive Manufacturers and Importers Association, or APIA, said Wednesday.

Overall auto sales, including commercial vehicles and buses, increased 31% to 9,406 units in April, from 7,188 units a month earlier. Compared with April 2010, however, overall auto sales declined 19.4%, the data showed.

In January to April, new passenger car sales fell 18% on the year to 23,216 units. Overall auto sales reached 27,254 units, down 14.6% from 31,932 units in the same period of 2010.

Dacia, made locally by French Renault's unit Dacia Automobile, was the best-traded brand on the local new cars market in January to April with 15,348 units, followed by Volkswagen with 6,762 units and Skoda with 4,823 units.

In 2010, Romanian car sales fell 18.3% on the year to 119,417 units.
