Moara Vlasiei-Ploiesti Highway Section Contract Will Be Terminated On May 30 Unless Problems Solved

The consortium building a highway section linking Bucharest to Ploiesti, in southern Romania, has until May 30 to remedy the project's problems, or the contract will be terminated.

The contract for the construction of the 42.5-kilometer long Moara Vlasiei-Ploiesti highway section was awarded to the consortium of UMB Spedition, Pa&Co International, Euroconstruct Trading '98 and Tehnostrade.

Transport Minister Anca Boagiu said the prior notice of termination was issued in April because the constructor had left the building site and had requested additional funds. She knew the companies met with ministry officials on Wednesday, but did not know what they discussed.

The consortium won the contract in 2006 for 702.58 million lei (EUR170.3 million), net of VAT.

In 2009, the contract value was increased by 25%, to RON883.7 million, net of VAT. The project is financed from the state budget. (EUR1=RON4.1254)
