Romanian new passenger car sales fell 17.7% to 14,751 units in the first quarter, from 17,920 units in the year-earlier period, the Automotive Manufacturers and Importers Association, or APIA, said Monday.

In March alone, passenger car sales were up 44.6% on the month to 6,119 units, the data showed.

Overall auto sales, including commercial vehicles and buses, declined 12% to 17,848 units in the first quarter, from 20,260 units in the corresponding period of 2010.

Dacia, made locally by French Renault's unit Dacia Automobile, was the best-traded brand on the local new cars market in January to March with 8,436 units, followed by Volkswagen with 3,658 units and Skoda with 2,648 units.

In 2010, Romanian car sales fell 18.3% on the year to 119,417 units.
