Romania’s energy strategy will continue to rely on coal for electricity production, Thursday said Tudor Serban, adviser to the economy minister.

Romania's energy strategy will continue to rely on coal for electricity production, Thursday said Tudor Serban, adviser to the economy minister.

"Romania will continue to rely on coal. Surely, the costs will be higher in the near future," Serban told a news conference held at thermal power producer Turceni.

He added, without details, that companies using lignite as fuel for energy production will invest in efficiency.

Romania's primary energy resources cumulated 34 tons of oil equivalent last year, including 6.5 million tons of coal (19% of the total).

Thermal power plants provide 50% of Romania's electricity production.
