Over 2,300 Medicines Risk Vanishing From Romanian Market

07.13.2017 By Oana Gavrila

Over 2,300 medicines risk vanishing from the Romanian market, 60% of which cost less than RON25, as the clawback tax is expected to reach 30% by the end of the year, said Adrian Grecu, head of the Romanian Association of Generic Medicine Manufacturers (APMGR).

Medicines that might be eliminated cover therapeutic areas such as cardiovascular disease, digestive problems, cancer, diseases of the central nervous system, and respiratory disease.

The association expects the clawback tax, a tax on turnover for medicines manufacturers, will reach 30% by the end of the year.

Grecu said the clawback is expected to reach 30% by the end of the year, spelling difficulty for all generics manufacturers, particularly local ones.

“An annual clawback of 30% means the pharmaceutical industry, manufacturers, contribute RON2.6 billion to finance medicines in Romania,” he said.
