Romanian agriculture union federation AGROSTAR has asked the Government to solve the issue of farming land cadastration, arguing that problems in the agricultural land parcel management system are the main causes of European Commission sanctions.

AGROSTAR president Niculae Stefan said Romania will continue to be fined as long as 70-75% of its agricultural area is not surveyed and registered. He also asks for action to stimulate the merging of farming land plots, to drive down production costs.

Stefan said the lifetime rent for land, dropped after joining the European Union, should be replaced by similar measures, and also argued for progressive taxation on agricultural land.
