French retailer Carrefour on Thursday said first-quarter sales in Romania fell 0.6% on the year to EUR267 million, despite a positive a positive impact from a growing territorial network.

French retailer Carrefour on Thursday said first-quarter sales in Romania fell 0.6% on the year to EUR267 million, despite a positive a positive impact from a growing territorial network.

In the first quarter of 2010, Carrefour reported total sales of EUR269 million on the Romanian market.

On a like-for-like basis, sales in Romania fell 4.1% in the first quarter of 2011 compared with the year-earlier period.

Carrefour said Romanian sales took a negative hit of 2.6% from currency exchange rates, while territorial expansion had a positive impact of 6.1%.

When calculated at constant exchange rates, Carrefour's sales in Romania rose 2% on the year in January to March, the retailer said.
