Businessman Dinu Patriciu's Mic.ro launched a total 461 grocery stores in Romania within its first year of activity, the company said in a news release Thursday.

The Mic.ro chain is a member of Patriciu's Mercadia Holland group and it currently reaches 35 cities and towns. The businessman plans to bring the network to another 23 towns this year.

"Mic.ro's development in this interval was based on a rapid expansion strategy, focused on the launch of stores as close to people as possible," the news release noted.

So far, the chain targeted large cities, such as Brasov, Constanta, Craiova, Pitesti, Ploiesti, Targu Mures and their neighboring towns.

"For 2011, Mic.ro plans to open grocery stores in another 23 cities, (…) with populations over 80,000," the company noted.

Patriciu said in October he would open 3,000 stores by the end of 2011, including 2,000 mobile units, with an investment of at least EUR200 million.

Other Mercadia Holland BV members include Bet Cafe Arena and iLearn.
