INS: Romania January-August Power Output Down 7.2% On Year

10.07.2013 By Bogdan Neagu

Romanian energy output fell 7.2% on the year to 14.09 million tons of oil equivalent in the first eight months, hurt by falling production in the thermal sector, official data showed Monday.

Thermal energy output dropped 25.1% on the year to 16.3 billion kilowatts hour, the statistics institute INS said.

Hydropower production rose 17.2% to 10.9 billion KWh in the first eight months of 2013, while nuclear output was up 3.4% to 7.7 billion KWh.

Wind farm output almost doubled to 2.9 billion KWh, from roughly 1.6 billion KWh in the January-August period of last year. Wind farm production covered 7.7% of the country’s electricity output in the first eight months of 2013.

Romania’s primary energy resources fell 12.2% on the year to 20.04 million tons of oil equivalent in the January-August period, the data showed.

Electric energy resources were down 7% to 38.14 billion KWh, largely due to a 5.7% decline in production.

Romanian final power consumption reached almost 33 billion KWh in January to August, down 7.4% from the same period of 2012. Public illumination fell 10.1% on the year, while household consumption inched down 0.1%.

Electric energy exports declined 8.8% year-on-year to 806.8 million KWh in the January-August period.
