Romania's Agency for Agriculture Payments and Intervention (APIA) has paid farmers about EUR3.24 billion since the beginning of the EU fund absorption process, APIA general manager Florin Marius Faur said Tuesday.

The APIA representative told a news conference farmers received EUR2.2 billion through the area payment scheme between 2007 and 2010.

According to Faur, farmers in disadvantaged areas and those who implemented agro-environment measures were paid EUR770 million, while EUR263 million were used for market measures, such as reconversion of vine plantations or interventions on the grain market.

He added that 1.055 million Romanian farmers, out of 1.088 million, have been granted EU subsidies.

Payment authorizations for the remaining 30,000 farmers are to be issued, said Faur.

He highlighted that over 98% of farmers have submitted electronic payment requests in 2011.
