The head of the Bucharest division of state-owned railway company CFR, Gavrila Manaila, has been sacked Saturday for defective management, the company said in a statement.

His attributions will be taken over by Laurentiu Maraloi.

The company said Manaila has been sacked over the mismanagement of maintenance and repair works on railway tracks in Bucharest's biggest train station, Gara de Nord, and for failing to ensure regular passenger rail traffic over this weekend.

The company said works to replace the busiest railroad switch in Gara de Nord were performed Friday night.

The switch is vital for the circulation of 80% of trains going in and out of the Bucharest station.

Fifteen trains registered massive delays because of the works, just as the railway company had supplemented the number of trains heading for the Black Sea coast, where thousands of tourists are spending their May 1 weekend.
