Draft Bill: One Third Of Customs Workers To Be Fired

05.11.2011 By Gavrila Oana

Romania’s Government plans to fire about one third of the country’s customs workers, according to a draft Government decision that amends the law regulating the country’s National Customs Authority (ANV).

According to the bill, out of the 4,586 people currently working for the customs authority, only 3,159 will keep their jobs.

The Customs Authority is run by a vice-president of the tax authority ANAF, who holds the rank of under secretary of state and who is appointed by decision of the prime minister.

Dozens of customs workers and border police officers have been arrested since February in a bid by authorities to crack down on corruption and contraband.
