05.27.2011 By Bostan Radu

Restructuring the Romanian postal service will affect around 2,000 employees, or 6% of the total staff, some of whom will be laid off, company president Daniel Neagoe told MEDIAFAX.

The company's new organizational structure, approved by the board of administration on Thursday, aims to make the Post's activity more flexible and efficient, said Neagoe.

Around 1500 postal offices of the almost 7100 will be closed. The Post's specialized branches will be reduced to four: Integrated Services, Financial Services, the Stamp Factory and the National Philately Museum. Neagoe said the structure of the central administration and the national network will be decided by the end of June.

"Aside from the economic impact we expect this measure to have on the Romanian Post's budget, we are preparing for the postal service liberalization, which begins on January 1, 2013," he said.

The management will implement changes to the working hours of mail carriers and post office employees, and will request a higher commission for pension delivery.

The Romanian Postal Service is the largest operator of its kind, with a territorial network of about 7100 offices. It has around 34,200 employees, including more than 11,000 mail carriers.

The company is owned by the Communications Ministry (75%) and Fondul Proprietatea (25%).

The Post's budget for this year forecasts total revenue of 1.51 billion lei (EUR365 million) and gross profit of RON2.34 million. It aims to have 32,663 employees by the end of the year, having allotted RON36 million for severance pay. (EUR1=RON4.1315)
