Justice Minister Meets with Serbian Counterpart to Discuss Ghita

Former MP Sebastian Ghita said Sunday evening he would try to intercept Romanian justice minister Tudorel Toader outsider the Justice Ministry in Serbia to hand him a memo.

Toader is in Belgrade on Monday to meet with his Serbian counterpart. Their agenda includes the case of Ghita, who is wanted for corruption in Romania but has fled to Serbia.

 

Basescu Calls on Romanian, Moldovan MPs to Vote on Union

Former Romanian president Traian Basescu on Sunday called on the Parliaments of Romania and the Republic of Moldova to vote for the union of the two countries.

More than 10,000 people took to the streets of the Moldovan capital Chisinau in support of reunification between Romania and Moldova. Basescu attended the rally, which coincided with the 100th anniversary of Moldova joining Greater Romania.

"We call upon the lawmakers of the Moldovan and Romanian parliament to vote in the near future for unification," Basescu said.

 

Nuclearelectrica Shuts Nuclear Reactor For Checks

Romania's nuclear power producer Nuclearelectrica shut down its Unit 1 reactor on Sunday, March 25, to assess a defect at one of the plant’s process systems, the company said in a statement.

It said the unit would be restarted after an estimated 48 hours, as soon as works are completed. The unit was shut down at 09:20 Romania time.

Nuclearelectrica said it also reduced the second reactor's power to 55%, in view of later shutting it down to replace a part.

 

Tarom Seeks to Cut Costs, Says General Manager

Tarom general manager Wolff Werner Wilhelm said the company's top priority is to cut costs and it's impossible to turn a profit so soon.

“Some people say we should already be turning a profit. That is not possible. One of our top priorities is to cut costs, first of all. We are renegotiating over 2,000 contracts,” he told a news conference in Timisoara.

He did not rule out staff cuts.

 

World No.1 Simona Halep Leaves Miami Open, Loses to Agnieszka Radwanska

World number one Simona Halep tumbled out of the Miami Open on Saturday, falling 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 to Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska.

The third-round defeat comes a week after Romania’s Halep was toppled in the semi-finals at Indian Wells by Japan’s Naomi Osaka, who went on to win the title in the California desert.

Despite the defeat, Halep is assured of retaining the number one spot when the rankings are updated at the end of the tournament.
