Basescu Says Iohannis Should Keep Kovesi in Office

Dismissing chief anticorruption prosecutor Laura Codruta Kovesi is a sensitive issue and a tough decision for President Klaus Iohannis, said former president Traian Basescu.

"It's important she stays until the end of the term,” said Basescu on Romania TV.

He said the president risks being perceived as abandoning the fight against corruption if he dismisses Kovesi.


Finance Minister Says Inflation Rate in Line with Govt Estimates

Romania's inflation rate will be close to what the government estimated for 2018, finance minister Eugen Teodorovici said Wednesday.



"We estimated inflation at 3.1% when we drafted the 2018 budget. Inflation is now higher than we expected but it will average around our estimate,” the minister said in Parliament.


Romania Had 5.22 Million Pensioners in 2017

The average number of pensioners in Romania dropped to 5.228 million people in 2017, 29,000 fewer than in 2016, data from the statistics board showed.

The average pensioner to employee ratio was 9 to 10 in 2017, the data showed, varying considerably across parts of the country.

In Bucharest, there were 5 pensioners per 10 employees, in Teleorman the ratio was 17 to 10, in Giurgiu - 16 to 10, and in Vaslui - 15 to 10.
