Authorities in Iasi, northeastern Romania, decided Monday to construct a new passenger terminal at the city's airport, for an estimated EUR1.8 million, as traffic through the airport has increased over the past five years.

Iasi County Council spokesman Sebastian Tataru said construction work will be finished by the end of 2011.

He added the new terminal represents only a temporary solution until the project to renovate the Iasi International Airport is completed. According to Tataru, authorities want airport modernization work to be finished by 2015.

Iasi Airport director Gheorghe Corjauteanu said traffic through the airport increased to 160,000 passengers last year from 148,000 in 2009. He estimated the number of passengers will increase by 25% in 2011 compared to 2010.

The project to upgrade the Iasi Airport was launched in 2006. The investment is estimated at about EUR200 million.
