Romania's Government will encourage the purchase of electric and hybrid cars with price discounts of 20% and 10%, respectively (up to EUR3,700 or EUR1,800, respectively), Environment Minister Lazlo Borbely announced Wednesday.

Individuals or companies participating in the cash-for-clunkers program will receive four vouchers for an electric car, or two vouchers for a hybrid car, said the minister.

The Government will also subsidize the infrastructure needed by electric/hybrid cars.

Last year, MEDIAFAX presented a Government strategy to introduce a financial incentive package and encourage purchases of electric cars through an "ecologic bonus" for consumers, and through tax deductions or state aid for producers.
