Cernavoda Power Plant Shuts Down Nuke For Planned Overhaul

05.04.2011 By Florentina Dragu

Romanian state-owned energy producer Nuclearelectrica will shut down the second reactor at its nuclear power plant in Cernavoda on Friday for a 25-day scheduled overhaul.

"The reactor will be cut off from the national power grid at 00:00 hours on May 7," Nuclearelectrica said in a statement Wednesday.

Cernavoda currently operates two reactors of 700 megawatts power each and covers around 20% of Romania's electricity production.

The government plans to build two additional nuclear reactors with similar capabilities in Cernavoda, but the project was put off after several key investors withdrew from the project.
