Romania imported in January natural gas at $399 per thousand cubic meters, the highest price since March 2009, according to data published by energy regulator ANRE.

The highest price seen in 2010 for natural gas was reached in December, namely $386 per 1,000 cubic meters.

Throughout the first quarter of 2009, Romania imported natural gas at prices between $492 and $493 per thousand cubic meters.

In addition, imported gas represented 30.07% of overall consumption in January, the widest level since March 2008.

At that time, imports covered some 31% of local gas consumption.

Romania imports gas indirectly from Russia.

The largest local gas producers are OMV Petrom (SNP.RO) and Romgaz Medias, which cumulate some 97% of Romania's gas output.

Last year, locally made gas covered 82.84% of consumption, while imports covered 17.16%.
