Metrorex Eyes Mainline Extension For EUR300M

05.17.2011 By Bostan Radu

Bucharest subway operator Metrorex wants to add two stations to the M4 line, as well as a terminal hub with a parking lot, dispatcher and bus station, through an investment of about 1.22 billion lei (EUR298.5 million, VAT included).

The contract will run for four years and will be financed through a loan from the European Investment Bank, the state budget and Metrorex's sources.

The M4 line has four stations at the moment - Gara de Nord 2, Basarab 2, Grivita and 1 Mai. Two more stations will be opened in July - Pajura and Parc Bazilescu. The future stations are Laminorului and Lac Straulesti. The project will bring the line's length to 7.8 km, capable of transporting 50,000 passengers per hour.

The authorities' plan is for surface and underground public transport to complement each other and discourage the use of personal vehicles for intra-city travel.
