Multinational Chains Dominate Romanian Retail

Romanian modern retail is dominated by foreign networks, which boast annual sales of EUR8.5-EUR9 billion. No local entrepreneur manages to compete against Kaufland, Lidl and Carrefour, and none have even managed to develop a network and then sell it to a major foreign company, as is the case of the largest retailer in Poland for instance. The Biedronka chain is currently held by Portuguese Jeronimo Martins, which however kept the original Polish brand.
