Romanian adjusted retail sales rose 1.2% in May compared with a month earlier, on higher demand in all sectors, the statistics institute INS said Tuesday.

Fuel sales increased 1.2% on the month in May, while sales of non-food and food items were up 1% and 0.1%, respectively. The data are adjusted for the number of working days and seasonal factors.

In annual terms, adjusted retail sales advanced 5.6% in May, again boosted by higher sales across the board, INS data showed.

Fuel sales rose 9.9% on the year in May, while non-food and food sales increased 4.3% and 3.3% on the year, respectively.

In January through May, retail sales were up 4.6% compared with the year-earlier period.

In unadjusted data, retail sales increased 4.6% in May from a month earlier and were up 5.9% compared with the same month of 2011.
