Anticorruption Authorities Raid Agigea Sud Customs Point

05.23.2011 By Ioana Tudor

Romanian authorities on Monday morning raided the Agigea Sud customs in southeastern Romania and checked local freight transport firm Romtrans, people familiar with the matter told MEDIAFAX.

Checkups also target the Constanta customs head and several customs workers - suspects in a file regarding illegal imports of freight from China through Black Sea harbors.

Border Police representatives told MEDIAFAX earlier Monday authorities conducted about 50 raids in Constanta and capital Bucharest in a case regarding contraband and tax evasion.

Since the beginning of the year, anticorruption authorities have conducted raids at customs points countrywide and arrested dozens of border police and customs workers on charges of corruption and contraband.

The raids are part of a decision the country's High Council for Defense adopted in June 2010 in a bid to crack down on tax evasion and contraband.
