Over 6,500 people are expected to compete in the fourth annual edition of the Bucharest International Marathon on October 9, which would be a 30% increase from the previous edition, competition organizers said Wednesday.

"We can't compare ourselves to the London marathon, though we observe all international standards. The Bucharest marathon grows each year. Last year, we had 30% more people than the year before, we expect the same thing this year," said Valeria Racila Van Groningen, head of the Bucharest Running Club, which organizes the marathon.

Last year's prizes were worth EUR40,000, she said, adding about 50 people have registered to compete so far in this year's edition, most of them foreigners.
