Senate Committee Approves New Amendment To Bill Regulating Adoptions

05.31.2011 By Ioana Tudor

The Romanian Senate’s committee for legal matters on Tuesday approved an amendment to a bill regulating adoptions, which makes the adoption impossible if the adopter’s spouse was sentenced for drug dealing or human trafficking.

The amendment was put forward by a High Council of Magistrates (CSM) representative, who attended debates in the committee. According to the CSM official, the Civil Code does not regulate this aspect.

Early April, the Senate's committee for human rights supported the bill on adoptions, which was put forward by the Government, and approved several amendments regarding international adoptions.

The respective amendments state two situations when international adoptions are possible: the adopter is a relative up to the fourth-degree of the child for whom internal adoption procedures were authorized; the adopter has Romanian citizenship too.

A report on the bill will be sent to the Senate for debates.
