Writer Mircea Horia Simionescu Dies At 83

Romanian novelist and essayist Mircea Horia Simionescu died Wednesday morning in capital Bucharest. He was 83.

Mircea Horia Simionescu is considered a forerunner of Romanian postmodernism. He wrote novels (Paltonul de vara, Invataturi pentru delfin), short stories (Banchetul) and essays.

He was born on January 23, 1928 in the southern city of Targoviste. He was the great grandson of liberal Ion Bratianu, a key political figure of the 19th century.

Mircea Horia Simionescu was a member of the Bucharest Writers' Association.

In 1998, he was honored with the Opera Omnia award.
