INS: Romania's Trade Deficit Narrows To EUR4.2B In First 9 Months

Romania’s trade deficit shrank 42.4% to EUR4.16 billion in the first nine months of 2013, as imports declined while exports increased, official data showed Monday.

In the first nine months of last year, the deficit was EUR7.22 billion, the country’s statistics institute INS said.

Exports of Romanian-made products rose 8.8% on the year to EUR36.48 billion in January through September, but imports declined 0.3% to EUR40.64 billion, the data showed.

Vehicles amounted to 42% of overall exports and 34.6% of the imports in the January-September period, while other manufactured items made up for 33.1% of Romanian exports and 30.3% of imports.

In September alone, Romania’s trade gap narrowed to EUR413 million from EUR836.7 million in the same month of 2012, the data showed. Exports rose 16.1% to EUR4.45 billion in September, while imports were up 4.2% to EUR4.87 billion.

Romania’s trade deficit narrowed to EUR9.6 billion in 2012, from EUR9.67 billion a year earlier.
